Criminal law

Criminal law is a system of law concerned with crimes and the punishment of criminals.

Most criminal law is based on government legislation.

Civil law

Part of the law that deals with disagreements between private individuals

Contract law
Contract law sets rules on agreements to buy and sell items and services
Trust law

Trust law sets out the rules for money that is put into an investment, such as pension funds

Constitutional law

Sets the rules for how governments are run and civil rights.

Administrative law

Administrative law is used by citizens when they want to challange government decisions

International law

International law is used to set out rules on how countries interact in areas such as trade, enviroment or war

Law

A system of rules that people are supposed to follow in a society or country.

The courts and police enforce this system of rules and punish people who break the law.

Trial

People who might have seen the crime or have knowledge of it

A trial of someone accused of killing another person

A trial involving a criminal act

A trial involving crimes related to financial and business dealings

A Statement by the defendant of whether they are guilty or innocent

Evidence

The facts related to a crime

Witness

People who might have seen the crime or have knowledge of it

Testify

A formal statement given in court by a witness under oath

Retire

To leave the court room and go to the jury room to decide the case

Deliberate

To discuss and consider the case with members of the jury

Verdict

The final decision in a trial

Convict

To declare that someone is guilty of a crime

Sentence

The punishment the defendant must do to pay for a crime

Fine

Money paid to the court if found guilty of crime

Prison sentence

Amount of time a guilty person must spend in jail
